What MacKillop students love about their school

Read the thoughts of students, past and present.

ADRIAN, COLLEGE CAPTAIN

The welcoming community
“The day I came to MacKillop, I noticed the immense sense of community – and I knew I’d be happy here for the next six years. I felt at home both inside and outside the classroom thanks to the helpful and friendly nature of the staff and students. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you believe in, you are sure to be welcomed and accepted here!”

ABIGIRL, COLLEGE CAPTAIN

A wealth of opportunity
“There’s something for everyone at MacKillop! Students can take up leadership roles, take part in a range of sports, gifted and talented programs, and extra-curricular groups, perform at Musicals and Variety Night, and take a range of fun and interesting classes. Because everyone is welcome at MacKillop, we’ve had lots of different people to share the journey with.”

NATHAN, YEAR 7

The smooth transition
“I was a bit nervous to come to high school, but you get the hang of it pretty quickly. I got lost a few times when I first started but the teachers and my friends were supportive and by the end of the first week I knew my way around. I’ve met lots of new people and made lots of new friends. MacKillop is an exciting experience with lots of different classes and people to meet.”

TAMARA, YEAR 8

Fun and interesting classes
“At MacKillop, we have classes that suit every interest. We have lots of electives, such as woodwork, performing arts, and cooking, and core subjects like Maths, Science, and PE. Year 7 studies I-Hum, which helps you settle in and form new friendships. My favourite classes are RE and English. I really enjoy the assignments, which let you express your abilities and knowledge.”

THOMAS, WANNI CAMPUS CAPTAIN

Leadership opportunities
“MacKillop offers a range of leadership opportunities, including the SRC and extra-curricular groups and committees. Leaders attend leadership conferences, visit schools, organise carnivals, lead fundraising initiatives, and more! We are always encouraged to demonstrate leadership qualities, and to think about the bigger picture and how our actions might impact others.”

ANOOJ, YEAR 10

Great teachers!
“MacKillop has provided me with a great education and countless opportunities to get involved. There's such a wide range of classes and my teachers enhance my learning experience by making my classes interesting and fun. My teachers know how to get the best out of me and always go out of their way to provide us with opportunities to find new interests and learn lots of different things.”

SARAH, YEAR 11

The two campuses
“I like that MacKillop is a big school, but it doesn’t feel big because the students are based over two campuses. Having Years 7-9 at the Wanniassa Campus gives Year 9s the chance to be leaders, while Year 7 can settle in quickly. The Isabella Campus has a very relaxed and mature feel, which is perfect for the senior years. Despite having two campuses, the community atmosphere is always fantastic at full-school events.”

JOSH, YEAR 12

Faith and community life
“As a Catholic, I enjoy being involved in our masses and liturgical celebrations. I’m able to use my talents by singing in the choir at these events. I like how both campuses come together to celebrate MacKillop Day, the carnivals, and other community days. I also like how diverse the school is – everyone is accepted and welcomed with open arms, no matter what religion or background you’re from.”

ROSE, YEAR 12

Benefits of Co-education
“For me, having a diverse range of students in the classroom, including boys and girls, offers a great mix of opinions and perspectives, which helps the learning experience. The co-educational experience at MacKillop prepares you for the real world where we will work with both males and females. I think people leave MacKillop with a balanced outlook on life and a healthy outlook on relationships.”

JAMIE, SPORTS CAPTAIN

A sporting college
“MacKillop is great for elite athletes, sports enthusiasts, and students who want to enjoy themselves and learn new skills. Many of our students have gone on to represent Australia, while our teams are successful and represent the College with pride. We also have several programs, like our Afternoon Sports Program, which introduce students to new sports and skills.”

CLAUDIA, COLLEGE DUX 2014

Excellence in education
“Although I started Year 7 a little behind, confused, and lost, the undying support of my teachers enabled me realise my potential. They harnessed our natural curiosity, fostered growth, evoked creativity, and stimulated a hunger for knowledge, which were the reasons for my success. At the end of Year 12, I received an ATAR that provided me with lots of options for the future.”

KHIAL, CLASS OF 2013

Education for the workforce
“When I was at MacKillop, there were a lot of things to help me make informed decisions about my future. We had the Trade Centre, the ASBA program, career education, workshops, and teacher advice. MacKillop is a leader in vocational education, and it’s thanks to the guidance of this school that I was able to pursue a career in plumbing, which I’m really enjoying.”
