What MacKillop students love about their school

Read the thoughts of students, past and present.

MATTHEW, COLLEGE CAPTAIN

A wealth of opportunity
“MacKillop has a huge range of classes and activities to suit every interest. I’ve been able to travel, lead, play sport, volunteer, and compete in academic competitions. My peers have plans to be builders, public servants, business people, teachers, doctors, performers, and athletes, and we’ve all been provided with the knowledge and experiences to reach these goals.”

ANASTASIA, COLLEGE CAPTAIN

A Catholic school for all
“I was nervous coming into a new school in Year 8, especially as a non-Catholic. However, I felt welcomed immediately, and my elective classes meant I could express myself and find who I was. My teachers’ passion for what they teach and the opportunities they’ve provided have helped to mould me into the person I am today. I’m proud to be College Captain of this wonderful school!”

KAI, YEAR 7

The transition to high school
“I was nervous and excited to come to High School, but I wasn’t too scared because I knew I had my friends around. On the first day, I made even more friends straight away. I got lost on the first day but a teacher helped me find my way. The teachers are nice and helpful. It’s different to primary school, you get to meet more friends and more teachers.”

YSIS, YEAR 8

Fun and interesting classes
“At MacKillop, we have fun and interesting subjects. There’s a lot of choice and freedom with the electives – my favourite class is Art but I’ve also tried Technology, Food, Textiles, Dance, Music, and Physical Education. In Year 7, you study Integrated Humanities, which helps you ease into High School. Our teachers are really friendly, explain things well, and make our classes interesting.”

CHRIS, WANNIASSA CAMPUS CAPTAIN

Leaders of tomorrow
“There are many different ways to be a leader at MacKillop. Even if it’s not a formal position on the Student Representative Council, everyone is encouraged to be a leader and to take responsibility. MacKillop has many different teams and clubs to be a part of, as well as different extra-curricular groups. Activities like Peer Program also help students to build their leadership skills.”

NICOLE, YEAR 11

Co-education
“I chose to come to MacKillop because it’s co-ed. At MacKillop, the boys and girls get along really well, and everyone treats each other with respect. Boys have provided me with a different perspective on learning, and I’ve been able to take classes, like Construction, that are typically aimed towards boys. It has been a natural learning experience that has prepared me for the world beyond College.”

ANOOJ, YEAR 11

Great teachers!
“MacKillop has provided me with a great education and countless opportunities to get involved. There's such a wide range of classes and my teachers enhance my learning experience by making my classes interesting and fun. My teachers know how to get the best out of me and always go out of their way to provide us with opportunities to find new interests and learn lots of different things.”

CHLOE, F&C CAPTAIN

Faith and community life
“As a Catholic, I like that you don’t have to be Catholic to come to MacKillop. We get to celebrate such a diverse range of faith and cultural backgrounds at our school. The two campuses come together a lot – just because we’re geographically separate, doesn’t mean we’re not spiritually connected! The contributions of students, staff, families, and friends give our school an amazing energy and richness.”

JOSEPH, SPORTS CAPTAIN

A sporting college
“There’s a good sporting culture at MacKillop. We always have high levels of participation and our sports teams do quite well. We have a range of athletes here, from those who have represented Australia, to those who play sport for fun and fitness. We also have a number of programs, like STEP, PEPC, and our Cross Campus Program, to help student athletes achieve their best on and off the field.”

KAYLA, YEAR 12

The welcoming community
“One of the things people notice is how welcoming a place this is. I’ve made countless friends over the past five years and I’ve found that the atmosphere is warm and inclusive. There’s a culture here that encourages you to be yourself. It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you’re from, you’re sure to be welcomed and accepted at MacKillop!”

KHIAL, CLASS OF 2013

Education for the workforce
“When I was at MacKillop, there were a lot of things to help me make informed decisions about my future. We had the Trade Centre, the ASBA program, career education, workshops, and teacher advice. MacKillop is a leader in vocational education, and it’s thanks to the guidance of this school that I was able to pursue a career in plumbing, which I’m really enjoying.”

CLAUDIA, COLLEGE DUX 2014

Excellence in education
“Although I started Year 7 a little behind, confused, and lost, the undying support of my teachers enabled me realise my potential. They harnessed our natural curiosity, fostered growth, evoked creativity, and stimulated a hunger for knowledge, which were the reasons for my success. At the end of Year 12, I received an ATAR that provided me with lots of options for the future.”
