Hairspray Jr

St Mary MacKillop College congratulates the cast and crew of the College musical, Hairspray Jr, after four impressive performances at the Wanniassa Campus Theatrette last week.

Principal Michael Lee’s praise after the final show on Friday was widely shared by the packed audience, with the general sentiment that Hairspray Jr was another standout in the long tradition of performing arts success at MacKillop.

After a well-attended opening night on Tuesday, word spread about the quality of the performance, leading to sell out shows on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The musical was an upbeat and energetic affair, with powerful songs, theatrical choreography, fun costumes, interesting characters, and relevant themes. The talent that students brought to the acting, singing, and dancing made for a truly entertaining experience.

The College thanks the core production team of Mrs Mansfield, Mrs van Doorn, Mrs McKenzie, Mrs Jiear, and Performing Arts Captain Natasha Brittain for the many hours they spent perfecting every aspect of the musical.

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew who produced a stellar performance every night.

Finally, thank you to the large crowds that supported the musical throughout the week - it’s delightful to see the MacKillop community enjoying the talent of our staff and students again this year.

The story:

The story of Hairspray Jr follows Tracy Turnblad, a full-figured girl with full-figured hair and a big heart, who has only one passion – to dance. When her determination and rock ‘n roll moves land her a spot on a local television dance program, ‘The Corny Collins Show’, she is transformed from an outsider to a teen celebrity. This trendsetter in dance and fashion uses her fame to win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, challenge the program's reigning princess Amber, and rally against racial segregation.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop made the statement: “We are but travellers here, so while we are here we should do as much good as we can and live in peace with each other.”

With this in mind, the College respectfully acknowledges the Ngunnawal people who are the Traditional Custodians and First People of the land on which we gather each day. The College also pays its respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, and any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples living and working in the MacKillop community.
