Opening Mass 2024

Celebrating the start of the year

St Mary MacKillop College celebrated the start of the 2024 school year with the Opening Mass on Thursday 22 February.

Students and staff of the College were joined in Eucharist at the Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium by College Chaplain Fr James Antony, parents, politicians, past staff members, former students, and representatives from the College Community Council, several primary and secondary schools, Catholic Education, and the Sisters of St Joseph.

The Mass introduced the 2024 Liturgical Theme of ‘Community’ and the Julian Tenison Woods quote, “Serving others is the most grateful sacrifice we can make.” Fr James added his thoughts during the homily, calling on those in the congregation to ‘abstain from hurting others for Lent.’

As usual, the quality of the music, led by our Chamber Choir, created a special atmosphere and helped transform the basketball stadium into a place of reflection and prayer.

The feedback on the event was extremely positive, with the Vicar for Education, Dr Patrick McArdle, claiming it was the most joyful and prayerful school liturgical celebration he had attended in 30 years.

The College thanks the Assistant Principal for Faith, Mission and Religious Education, Mrs Clare Kinnane, for her leadership and organisation of the event. Congratulations also to the large team who created such a deeply moving community celebration of Eucharist and congratulations to the students for the solemnity and willing participation they brought to the occasion.

Acknowledgement of Country

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop made the statement: “We are but travellers here, so while we are here we should do as much good as we can and live in peace with each other.”

With this in mind, the College respectfully acknowledges the Ngunnawal people who are the Traditional Custodians and First People of the land on which we gather each day. The College also pays its respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, and any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples living and working in the MacKillop community.
