Opening of the Performing Arts Centre

The 7 Brunswick Street Building

The College held the opening and blessing of the new 7 Brunswick Street Performing Arts Centre at the St Peter’s Campus on Thursday 13 March.

The blessing was performed by the College Chaplain, Fr Simon Falk, while Kofi Owusu-Ansah, who is an ARIA Award winner, 2023 ACT Australian Young Person of the Year, and member of MacKillop’s Class of 2015, declared the building open. Kofi is more widely known by his stage name, Genesis Owusu.

In his speech, Kofi talked about creating and performing, the opportunities the new centre would bring, and the importance of music in both his life and wider society.

Afterwards, Kofi generously took the time to talk with students, providing them with words of advice or taking an interest in their own pursuits.

Throughout the ceremony, the guests were treated to performances from some of the College’s senior dance and music students.

The event was attended by Performing Arts students from Years 9-12, teachers of Dance, Drama and Music, parents and carers, members of Catholic Education, some past Principals and Campus Heads, and a number of Federal and Territory politicians.

The 7 Brunswick Street Performing Arts Centre, which is named after the birthplace of Mary MacKillop, has been in use since late last year.

In the evening, Drama and Dance students performed the centre’s first public performance, which was a piece titled ‘7 Brunswick Street’. The performance told the story of Brunswick St from the 1840s until today.

Acknowledgement of Country

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop made the statement: “We are but travellers here, so while we are here we should do as much good as we can and live in peace with each other.”

With this in mind, the College respectfully acknowledges the Ngunnawal people who are the Traditional Custodians and First People of the land on which we gather each day. The College also pays its respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, and any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples living and working in the MacKillop community.
