Farewell to the Class of 2021

An emotional goodbye

The Class of 2021 have said an emotional goodbye to the College at their Year 12 Breakfast and Farewell Assembly this morning.

The day commenced with breakfast in the Providence Building at 8am, before the graduating class gathered in the St Peter's Campus Gymnasium for their final assembly at MacKillop.

The assembly, which was streamed live to the rest of the campus, featured tributes, dance and song performances, lots of humour, video clips, photo montages, and deep reflection. There were emotional speeches from the College Captains, Year Coordinator Peter Johnson, Principal Michael Lee, and Campus Head Paul O'Callaghan.

Mr O'Callaghan's speech happened to be the last time he would farewell a graduating class, with his retirement planned for the end of the 2021 school year.

To mark the occasion, Mr Lee handed Mr O'Callaghan the task of reading the famous Dr Seuss book, Oh the places you'll go. Over the years, it has become tradition for Mr Lee to read this book at the conclusion of the assembly before presenting each member of Year 12 a copy as a gift. It was a nice touch to allow Mr O'Callaghan that honour, especially because he had been the Padua Campus Head when the cohort commenced Year 7 there in 2016.

At the conclusion of the assembly, Year 12 exited the gymnasium for one last time to a guard of honour from staff and students that stretched all the way to the student car park. During this time, our Year 12s were able to personally thank the teachers, support staff, and students from other year groups who had helped make their time at MacKillop so memorable.

This cohort has had to endure two lockdowns, cancelled events, and lots of uncertainty throughout their two most important years at school. Despite this challenge, the students can be proud of what they have achieved at MacKillop, as well as the way they have achieved it.

Congratulations, Year 12. Thank you for what you've contributed to the College, and best wishes for the future!

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop made the statement: “We are but travellers here, so while we are here we should do as much good as we can and live in peace with each other.”

With this in mind, the College respectfully acknowledges the Ngunnawal people who are the Traditional Custodians and First People of the land on which we gather each day. The College also pays its respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, and any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples living and working in the MacKillop community.
