New Record in the Relay

Relay for Life fundraising

MacKillop’s Year 12 students have managed to set a new College record in the Relay for Life, amassing a total of $66,000 for Cancer Council ACT.

The total amount, which was enough to top the $59,000 raised by the Class of 2021, saw MacKillop finish the Relay for Life as Canberra’s top fundraising school – although teams are still able to donate up until the end of May.

Student Emily Cridland, who had sought the promotional support of Mark Parton MLA on behalf of MacKillop, was the highest individual student fundraiser in Canberra and the second-highest fundraiser in the overall Canberra rankings.

Whilst the Class of 2022 has every right to celebrate these efforts and achievements, the real reward for the students was to see the money go to a good cause.

Due to uncertainty with COVID, Canberra schools were encouraged to participate in the ‘Relay Your Way’ event, which resulted in MacKillop holding the relay at the St Peter’s Campus on Saturday 2 April.

Students braved the cold and the rain as they walked, ran, or rolled their way around the St Peter’s Campus oval between the hours of 7am and 7pm. Over the day, several students in the year group covered the distance of a marathon.

At the conclusion of the relay, students held a candle ceremony in honour of loved ones lost to cancer and to support those who are living with cancer.

The College thanks all who contributed and congratulates the Class of 2022 on this fantastic achievement.
