Opening Mass 2021

St Mary MacKillop College celebrated the start of the 2021 school year with not one but two Opening Masses on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 March.

Due to COVID restrictions and the sheer size of MacKillop, the College was unable to hold the Opening Mass in its usual venue at the Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium. The decision was made to hold the Opening Mass at each campus, with Years 10-12 celebrating on the Thursday and Years 7-9 on the Friday.

Students and staff were joined in Eucharist by College Chaplain Fr James Antony, who began proceedings with a tribute to the late Lachlan Seary, a member of the Class of 2019 who tragically entered into eternal life over the Canberra Day long weekend.

Amidst this tragedy, the College community has been able to find comfort in the 2021 College Theme, which was introduced at the Opening Mass. The theme for the year is from Mary MacKillop:

“Great is the strength we possess in our unity”
(Mary MacKillop, 1874)

As usual, the quality of the music and choir created a special atmosphere and helped transform the gymnasium into a place of reflection and prayer.

Congratulations to the large team who created two deeply moving community celebrations of the Eucharist and congratulations to the students for the solemnity and willing participation they brought to the occasion.

Acknowledgement of Country

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop made the statement: “We are but travellers here, so while we are here we should do as much good as we can and live in peace with each other.”

With this in mind, the College respectfully acknowledges the Ngunnawal people who are the Traditional Custodians and First People of the land on which we gather each day. The College also pays its respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, and any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples living and working in the MacKillop community.
